Description of Workshops:
A programme of separate intensive workshops for adults and children.Participants will be taught the essential techniques for flamenco dance focusing on correct methods and safe dance practice based on the principles of bio-dynamics, along with close attention to emotional expression that is delivered by good technique.
Techniques that will be workshopped include:
- Zapateado (footwork)
- Cuerpo (upper body work, posture, alignment)
- Braceo (arms and hands)
- Marcaje (movement phrases for sung sections)
- Compás y Palmas (rhythm and clapping)
- Jaleos (rhythmic vocalisations)
- Performance skills, body language
- Stretching, body toning and body awareness
Students will also be taught some choreography as a learning tool. Depending on the level of participants, choreographies will be chosen from Tangos Flamencos (not Argentinian tango), Bulería, Rumba Flamenca, Sevillanas, or Soleá.
In keeping with safe dance practice all sessions will start and finish with warm up, stretching and cool down.
On-line Registration & Payments Form is at the bottom of this page.
What to wear:
Ladies/girls:
- Skirt: ankle length full-flared skirt. Instructions for flamenco skirts will be made available to you if you wish to have one made by your tailor.
- Top: leotard top (sleeved or sleeveless), or T-shirt/Jersey top (should be figure hugging. No padded shoulders).
- Shoes: hard-soled leather shoes with closed toe and thick heel about 5cm high.
Sports pants (track pants) will also be needed for stretching sessions. You may also bring a cardigan in case you feel chilled.
Men/boys:
- Sports pants (jeans are too restrictive for full movement).
- Top: T-shirt or leotard top.
- Boots: hard-soled leather shoes, preferably supple boots with Cuban heel. Business shoes usually don't have enough of a heel, and sports shoes are too soft.
You may also bring a cardigan in case you feel chilled.
General advice: clothes should be comfortable but still figure hugging to allow the teacher to monitor your technique - stretch fabrics are best. Baggy clothes and padded shoulders aren't suitable as they hide the body from teacher's view. Jeans are also a poor choice as they restrict full range of movement in the legs. Avoid open-toed shoes and stiletto heels.
